Let me be frank with you. Housing here sucks. If it weren’t for that one
small, huge issue, things could be really awesome. The housing situation is making life difficult for so many, both “natives” and those coming from outside the area. For now though I don’t want to focus on that. If you’re thinking about coming here, don’t let that deter you. Consider other options. By that I mean look outside Williston. Having lived here a year and a half now and traveling continually, I can tell you that all around this town are wonderful small communities. The price of living may not be cheaper but perhaps instead the payoff will be peace of mind or quality of life. By all accounts Williston is pushing over 40,000 people now although not everyone is willing to admit this. We are expected to double this in the next few years and when fast growth happens sometimes those things that make a small town special begin to disappear. I’m not sure how much of the old, small town Williston still exists (I got here in 2012 remember) but I can tell you that small town America is still alive and well all around us. You can work in Williston and still live in one of these small towns. Traveling 30 or 40 miles to work is not really a big deal and after a while it will seem like just round the corner.
Another town growing by leaps and bounds but still on the smaller side is Watford City. About 50 miles from Williston, it has plenty of good paying jobs and housing is available, although expensive. One thing it also still has, is small town awesomeness. Is awesomeness even a word? Just check out the picture I am posting with this write up. It was done in Barrett Pharmacy in Watford City. This is something that I am quite sure you would never find in a big city. This pharmacy (and others like it I’m sure) know the families in this town. They care about the little things. That makes all the difference to me. I posted this on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/willistonnd) and many locals confirmed that the pharmacists (this was not prescribed by a doctor despite what the meme says) are wonderful, caring people.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not downing Williston. I see these smaller towns as suburbs of Williston. They are all pieces of the same puzzle. In the end, we all need to work together to form the same picture.
If you are looking for other possible places to call home consider some of the following: Wildrose, Ross, Ray, Trenton, Tioga, Stanley, Alexander, Grenora. In Montana consider Sidney and Fairview.
