First man camps and now the strip clubs. Is nothing sacred?
Apparently the city commissioners voted unanimously to do away with downtown adult establishments meaning that both Whispers and Heartbreaks are going to be left with some decisions to make. They have one year to relocate under the new provision. Although some including Sam Stickley (a disc jockey for Heartbreakers) asked the commission to reconsider, it does not seem likely.
My guess is that although some will disagree, the majority of people are going to welcome this decision. This doesn’t mean they have to leave, it just means they can no longer have exotic dancing so if they wanted to continue on in that location as just a bar, they can. If they want to continue with dancing then they have to move their business to the outskirts of town, or the area zoned for Heavy Industrial.
There was talk from the owners that moving may cause an undue hardship financially but couldn’t it be said that they should have been saving like everyone else? Strip clubs and bars are big business. Yes they pay a lot in expenses but there is good money there no matter what anyone tells you. Plenty of businesses have had to move location so this doesn’t not mean that anyone has to go out of business if they choose to move. They simply will have to adapt like many others have had to do in the last handful of years (or times before). How many residents were forced to move from their homes?
Either way I am not someone who frequents bars and I don’t really care whether or not adult dancing exists but I do know one thing. No matter where they move (IF they move) the people that like them now, will follow. It’s the nature of that kind of business. I don’t see them lacking in customers. As several people have already expressed, the decision to do this was made well before any vote was taken.
